The Big Quake: It’s a start…

I don’t feel I truly conceived what happened in Haiti. Living in the SF East Bay, I reside directly on the Hayward fault. The experts tell me that it’s only a matter of time before we experience the “Big One.” Most of us don’t think about it. Why should we? All I can think of is the looting and desperation that followed in Port-au-Prince. Whenever I bring up the topic, most people respond with, “Well it was because their buildings weren’t up to code.” They were built by Humanitarians and other funding organizations. Sometimes when a 7.0 hits right in the center of a modern society, there are inevitable consequences.

I do not gain satisfaction by arousing fear, nor do I wish to perpetuate it. I just urge people to be aware. To think with logic and readiness. We can learn a lot from Haiti, but most of us have already moved on.

Please remember that DUCKING AND COVERING isn’t the only thing that will save you in a quake…
